Hi, I installed L4D using the guide on this forum (skidrow release).. only 9/10 times when I try to connect I get the following error:
Invalid PROTOCOL_VERSION, expecting 38, got 37
I am absolutely certain that I applied the latest patch.
What's weird is that I have managed to join one game so far.

you are updated to v1.0.0.8 which uses protocol 38... Versions 1.0.0.7 and earlier used protocol 37. You can either stop at v1.0.0.7 and not install the latest update and you will be able to game on all protocol 37 servers no matter what their version is. OR you can update to v1.0.0.8 and play on v1.0.0.8 servers with protocol 38... OR you can update to v1.0.0.8 - then downgrade to protocol 37 with the quickfix that I posted on here a few days ago. It allows you to update to v1.0.0.8 then downgrade to protocol 37 and play on any version server running p-37. I removed it from the original post - so here it is again with instructions: This is for v1.0.0.8 clients wanting to downgrade to protocol 37: Replace the following files with ones from the quickfix to get it to downgrade to protocol 37: l4d\left4dead\bin\server.dll [1/15/2009] with this one--->server.dll [12/6/2008] l4d\left4dead\bin\client.dll [1/15/2009] with this one --->client.dll [12/6/2008] l4d\bin\engine.dll [1.15.2009] with this one --->engine.dll [12/28/2008] VUP patched v2.01 - I believe. For v1.0.0.8 servers wanting to downgrade to protocol 37: Only replace the engine.dll and the server.dll Bsackup original files - so you can revert back to protocol 38. Download the Protocol 37 QuickFix: RapidshareNOTE: Eventually All Servers Should update to v1.0.0.8 with protocol 38: Better to have consistency accross all servers; Better to be prepared for any possible future patches. Edit: also noticed new v1.0.0.8 servers have the older client.dll... I replaced the older client.dll on my server with the newer client.dll from the mini-update [also had to copy sound folder over from my client install to my server install] and now I can play through my server... I'm gonna look into this a little further. It might be possible to just download the L4D server right from steam, replace a few files and have a fully playable cracked Left 4 Dead - straight from steam!

When I use the Quickfix I get the same error I got before upgrading to v1.0.0.8 (NULL XUID). Am I supposed to replace the Left 4 Dead.exe with the one coming with the fix? I assume I'd have to reapply Rev Emu after replacing the exe as if I don't it gives me the Steam must be running (Or something along those lines) error.
EDIT: Also how can I tell what version a server is? Thanks in advance
