How To Install Non-Steam Left 4 Dead:
Updated 9-6-2009

Prerequisites:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 - Download and install: 32-bit or 64-bit
Microsoft's .net Framework 3.5 - Download and install .net 3.5

Quick Setup:

I. Install Left 4 Dead:
Download and Install either Skidrow, iAPULA, or [psy] releases (other FULL retail releases will work also).

II. Update Left 4 Dead:
Update L4D to the latest version using the update installers linked below.
The Full Update will update any version L4D. After installing latest full/incremental update, install any hotfixes that are available.

III. Patch Game with Rev-Emu:
Install Latest Rev-Emu Installer.
Go into your Left 4 Dead\bin\config folder and make Masterserver.vdf Read-Only.
Edit rev.ini with notepad to change your name. [SteamUser=YourName and PlayerName=YourName]

IV. Play by executing the Cracked Left4Dead.exe!:
Create a shortcut on your desktop to left4dead.exe and add -console -novid -nohltv -serverbrowser to its launch parameters:
Right click your shortcut, select properties.  In the "Target" field, you should have:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Left 4 Dead\left4dead.exe" -console -novid -nohltv -serverbrowser

Launch the game, uncheck "Steam Cloud", and accept.
Play Left 4 Dead!

BEWARE: Leaving steam cloud checked will result in the game crashing to desktop every time you start it.
See the 'Steam Cloud' entry registry solution here]

Configure Qtracker for non-steam Left 4 Dead:

Left 4 Dead is now supported in the latest public version of Qtracker [4.9].
You will need to configure Qtracker to support Non-Steam Left 4 Dead:

1- Open Qtracker.

2- Left click on "View" --> select "Settings" --> "Games" --> "Installed" --> select Left 4 Dead.

3- Click the browse button for "Application used to play game" and browse to and open "left4dead.exe"
[Example:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Left 4 Dead\left4dead.exe]
Game directory will be set automatically.
Add -console -novid to the command parameter line. Click Apply, then OK.

To add a cracked serverlist to Qtracker:

In the games&folders pane, right click Left 4 Dead -> select "new" -> "folder" and name it "Private Servers".

To add a single server:
Right click on the "private servers" folder you created --> select "New" --> "Server", enter the server IP/port to add it to your list.

To import a server.txt file:
1- Download qtracker serverlists from the main-site.
2- Right click the "private servers" folder for your game --> select "Import servers into this folder" and browse to the private server .txt file that you downloaded. Click open. Press F5 to refresh the list and wait a moment. Smiley

Alternative importing:
You can also add single or multiple server IP's to Qtracker by copy/pasting them right into the server window of the game folder you have selected.

Configure Xfire for Non-Steam Left 4 Dead:

I - Locate and edit the xfire_games.ini file.
Windows XP: Look in Program Files\Xfire
Vista: Look in C:\ProgramData\Xfire

Open xfire_games.ini with notepad.
Use notepad's 'find...' feature to locate Left 4 Dead.
Should look like this:
Code:
[5633]
LongName=Left 4 Dead
ShortName=l4d
LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\InstallPath
LauncherExe=steam.exe
DetectExe=SteamApps\*\left 4 dead\left4dead.exe
LauncherNetworkArgs=+connect %UA_GAME_HOST_NAME%:%UA_GAME_HOST_PORT%
Launch=%UA_LAUNCHER_EXE_PATH% -applaunch 500 %UA_LAUNCHER_EXTRA_ARGS% %UA_LAUNCHER_NETWORK_ARGS%
ServerStatusType=SOURCE
ServerEncodingType=UTF8
InGameRenderer=D3D9
InGameFlags=ENABLE_MOUSE|USE_DINPUT_MOUSE

Find the following lines:

LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\InstallPath
LauncherExe=steam.exe
DetectExe=SteamApps\*\left 4 dead\left4dead.exe

And Replace with this:

LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Left 4 Dead
LauncherExe=left4dead.exe
DetectExe=left4dead.exe
Example:

Save and Exit notepad. Restart Xfire.

II - Next, add L4D to the Xfire detected games list:
Go to Tools -> Options -> Games tab -> expand the "Not Installed" section and select Left 4 Dead.
Example:

Check the option that says "Manual Setup" then browse to the folder where L4D is installed.
Add Extra Command Line Parameters. Click apply and OK.

All Done!

NOTE: When XFire updates, the xfire_games.ini will need to be modified again with the above procedure.

How to play non steam Left 4 Dead on LAN:

To play non steam Left 4 Dead on LAN, you must have the developer's console enabled. The host computer must initiate the game with the following Host commands, and then players can join the hosted game using the Client commands:

Host:

1) Enter console [~]
2) Type:
sv_lan 1 [enter]
net_start [enter]
map [TAB thru list, enter]

Cient:

Enter console (~) and type:
connect {ip address of host} [enter]

How to play non steam Left 4 Dead on Hamachi:

1- The players have to have hamachi open and be in the same hamachi network.

2- Open left 4 dead; From the main menu, open up the console [~].

3- To host a local game, [one of the players has to do this to open a local server]:
Enable LAN, type in:
sv_lan 0

[If no red lines returned from the console then you are doing it right.]

Then set the game difficulty, type in
z_difficulty
and you will see in a drop down menu there are Normal, Advanced and such.

and then pick a map, type in
map
in the dropdown menu you will see a list of maps - just scroll down, pick one, and press enter.
Upon doing this, your computer will automatically start a game on your LAN interface.

After the host finished loading, you must enable people to join without going through a lobby:
open up the console again, and type:
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0

4- Now, for the other players to join, they have to type this in the console:
connect {IP address of host}
[make sure to put a space between connect and the IP address]
and the client will load and join the host.

--------------------------
When we did this, we had different hamachi ip ranges, we did not use aliases, and it works fine.
apparently it lags for a couple minutes when a new safe house finishes loading but it sually go away within 2 minutes, so just wait in the safe house for a bit until everyone confirms they are not lagging.

Warning: Hamachi, to some degree, is like setting up VIP highway from one computer over the internet to your house.  It is not a safe thing to join some random hamachi network and just leave it idling.  It is recommended that you use it only with buddies you can trust.  Set the network to public in vista and turn off file sharing.
----------------------------

a small list of commands you might use in the console:
(value 0 stands for false, 1 stands for true)

openserverbrowser //open server browser (it works only after a server browser patch, i think)
sv_lan 0 // Disable LAN
mp_disable_autokick 1 // Disable Autokick
sv_cheats 0 // Disallow Cheats
sv_clearhinthistory 0 //Clear Server Side Hint History
sv_consistency 1 //Enforce file consistency
sv_pausable 0 //Server not pausable
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 // Disable Lobby Connections
sv_unreserve // Don't list publicly

2- Right click on the newly created shortcut and select 'properties'. Click the 'shortcut' tab and in the Target line you will see the following: C:\srcds\l4d\srcds.exe.
3- Now we need to add the following parameters to this line to get the server started properly:
Code:
-console -game left4dead +hostip YOUR.WAN.IP.ADDY -ip YOUR.LAN.IP.ADDY +hostport 27016 +clientport 27006 -nohltv +exec server.cfg +map l4d_hospital05_rooftop
Fill in YOUR.WAN.IP.ADDY with your external IP address and YOUR.LAN.IP.ADDY with your internal 'static' IP address if you are behind a router.  You could change +map to whatever you prefer.
Don't forget to put a space between srcds.exe and -console.  It should look like this:
Code:
C:\SRCDS\l4d\srcds.exe -console -game left4dead +hostip 68.192.36.253 -ip 192.168.0.121 +hostport 27021 +clientport 27009 -nohltv +exec server.cfg +maxplayers 12 +map l4d_hospital05_rooftop
Click OK when finished.  Double Click Shortcut to start server.

IV.  Updating Server:
To update server, just run the update.bat that you created in the first part of this guide.

V.  Cracking Server:
Make sure you have the the following set in your server.cfg:
sv_lan 0
mp_disable_autokick 1
sv_consistency 1
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0

Method 1:
Go to C:\SRCDS\l4d\bin\ and save a copy of your original engine.dll for backup purposes.
Download n0limit's cracked engine.dll [see attachment] and place it into your l4d/bin folder.
You must have .Net framework installed AND Set sv_lan to 1.

Method 2:
Use the Revolution Emulator:
1. Download REVOLUTiON's Steam Emulator [rev-emu] from L4D Downloads
2. In C:\SRCDS\l4d\bin\ - Rename "steamclient.dll" to "steamclient_ori.dll"
3. Extract the contents of Rev-Emu to C:\SRCDS\l4d
Move steamclient.dll into C:\SRCDS\l4d\bin directory.
4. Open "rev.ini" and edit ClientDLL like this: ClientDLL=steamclient_ori.dll
Set CacheEnable=False and SteamClient=True.
Uncomment all the GameServer policy rules [remove the #] and set all of them to True.
Save & Exit.

NOTE: In order for the rev-emu to work properly, you need to have MS visual C++ and .Net Framework:
Download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package: 32-bit or 64-bit
Download and install Microsoft's .net Framework 3.5

ENJOY!

Private Server Setup Tips:

Here are a few tips for running your cracked server:
Server admins, make sure to have the following SET in your server.cfg:
sv_lan 0
mp_disable_autokick 1
sv_consistency 1
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0

also, server admins who have the following set in rev.ini will assign UserID's to players based on IP addresses.  This will prevent people behind a router from connecting more than one player from that IP address on a server:
Code:
# Change SteamDll to point to your official Steam client DLL.
# This setting is required for Steam UserID Validation functions
# to support legit Steam IDs. Otherwise, all clients would get
# IDs generated from their IP addresses.
# Also make sure you uncomment the line below (remove "#")
# if you want to use this setting!
#
#SteamDll=C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam\Steam.dll

# Change SteamClient to True if you want to use the steamclient emulator
#
SteamClient =True

To fix this, you must set the emulator to use the origianl steam file that was downloaded through the server update tool.
so point to your SteamDll=C:\L4D_Server\l4d\bin\Steam.dll to the origianl and remove the # in front of it.
#
SteamDll=C:\L4D_Server\l4d\bin\Steam.dll

# Change SteamClient to False if you don't want to use the steamclient emulator
#
SteamClient=True
This will allow those behind the same router to play on the same server and will assign a unique UserID to all players.

Common L4D Problems & Solutions:

[Problem] How do I bring up the console?
[Solution] Use one of three different methods:
   1- Go to your left4dead\cfg folder and open up config.cfg.
   Add: bind "button" "toggleconsole"
   [button=any keyboard button you wish to bind console to.]
   2- In game, go to options and enable "Developer console".
   3- Add -console to your Left 4 Dead shortcut. Right click L4D shortcut -> select properties -> look for the "Target" line and add -console to the end:
"C:\games\Left 4 Dead\left4dead.exe" -console

[Problem] How do i disable intro videos?
[Solution] Add -novid to your Left 4 Dead shortcut. Right click L4D shortcut -> select properties -> look for the "Target" line and add -novid to the end:
"C:\games\Left 4 Dead\left4dead.exe" -console -novid

[Problem] How do I find out what version of Left 4 Dead I have installed.
[Solution] In game, type version in console to see your version #.

[Problem] "Invalid PROTOCOL_VERSION, expecting 1013, got 1011"
[Solution] "Expecting 1013" = your game version.  "got 1011" = server version.
The invalid protocol error occurs when you connect to a server that is running a different version than yours.  Make sure you are connecting to an updated server that matches your version.

[Problem] Your string table differs from the server's / Server uses different class table.
[Solution] This error is caused when you try to connect to a server that is running a custom map or campaign that you do not have.  It can also be caused by games with different versions.

[Problem] After updating the game, the sound has a lot of static especially if someone uses a moltov.
[Solution] The problem is caused by a bad soundcache.
To fix it go here: Left 4 Dead/left4dead/maps/soundcache
Delete "_master.cache" - the game will rebuild it with newer files.
OR you can fix it in-game with by typing:  snd_rebuildaudiocache in console.

[Problem] How do I bring up the server browser?
[Solution] Go to your left4dead\cfg folder and open config.cfg. Add: bind "button" "openserverbrowser".
[button=any keyboard button you wish to bind the server browser to.]
Server browser doesn't work in non steam versions, it will show up but not function.

[Problem] I can't see my or any servers in lobby, even if we are in same lan/hamachi.
[Solution] Make sure server and client is using sv_lan 0, make sure all use the latest hamachi version, some how it seems like Vista machines wont find any servers in lobby but XP users will find. If you did the above and you can't find any servers type connect ip:port in console.

[Problem] I get Class C error when I try to join
[Solution] Make sure you use latest hamachi and sv_lan is 0. Then type connect ip:port.

[Problem] I get connection timed our after 10 retries.
[Solution] Make sure server port is forwarded and firewalls are configured / turned off.

[Problem] My L4D is crashing to desktop.
[Solution] #1- If you use Vista, disable visual themes when running the game.
   #2- Disable V-Sync in advanced video options.
   #3- Turn off Multicore in advance video options.
   #4- Make sure Steam Cloud is disabled. [see next problem]

[Problem] Cannot get rid of Steam cloud - Game keeps crashing!
[Solution] If you left Steam Cloud checked and cannot run the game without it crashing:
1- Go to Registry Key in regedit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\1\Cloud
It will have a default value of 0x00007fff (32767) meaning steam cloud is enabled
2- Set the value to 0 to disable steam cloud.
-OR-
delete this key and the dialog box will pop up again next time you run left4dead.exe.

[Problem] "The Server Requires that you be running Steam" Error
[Solution] Make sure Revolution's Steam Emulator is properly installed.
Make sure you install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package, for the steam emulator to work.

[Problem] Malware in the Skidrow release.  The uninstaller (skidrow release), takes a very long time to finish and may stop responding.  Afterward (or during) removal, system fonts become different.  Bold and italic fonts appear where they should be normal.
[Solution] If you already uninstalled:
The installer this group made registers some fonts (in Left 4 Dead\platform\vgui\fonts) with windows that it shouldn't, causing your original fonts to be unregistered (but not deleted).  The originals should still be in WINDOWS\Fonts, they're just not active.  Move them out of the folder and then back again to re-register them:
ARIALN.TTF  arialbd.ttf  lucon.ttf    tahoma.ttf  trebuc.ttf
arial.ttf   cour.ttf     marlett.ttf  times.ttf   verdana.ttf
If you are about to uninstall:
Make a backup of FONTS folder in your WINDOWS folder before Left 4 Dead uninstall.
After uninstall, move the fonts back to instal them. Click yes. Then restart pc.

Yar.. added yer files to the L4D Downloads Smiley
-satannuts

Yarrr . . . version 1.0.1.0 now available:

http://www.epcgaming.com/smf/index.php/topic,13641.0.html

Quote
*EDIT*

The 1.0.1.0 update can be downloaded here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?uzzhty5yyjo

Simply overwrite the files in your Left 4 Dead game folder with these new ones, although please be aware that the majority of private servers are still running version 1.0.0.9 - if you would like to downgrade (back to 1.0.0.9) after applying this update, please download and overwrite with these files:

http://www.mediafire.com/?nchqmcgzjwn

Personally, I'm sticking with 1.0.0.9 until more servers apply the update...

It's also recommended to use revemu 9.71 which can be downloaded here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?dpnmnn1ygjv

CB

satannuts, didn't update your excellent guide in this thread as it's so organised I thought it best to let you do it...

cool, thanks, bongo!  I was waiting til the dust settles a bit.  good to keep everyone at v9 until the new update is confirmed working and any updated rev-emu is released.  Seems to be a problem with the game's server query after this last update...

Sounds like it could be a port issue.  Do you have a router? firewall?  Have you opened ports up?
If yer gaming on the same rig as yer server, make sure there are no port conflicts.

does the Full L4D update to v1013 installer update all the files until v1013 or do i have to install all the other patches anyway?

Why - would it be called a FULL update if it didn't?

It doesn't, It simply says your download is starting, and you have to wait for about 5 seconds. I don't see why your page is refreshing.

Add a WORKING Server Browser to No Steam Left 4 Dead Main Menu

First, configure the original steamclient.dll.
Non-Steam users should already have this configured:
1. Get the original steamclient.dll from Left4Dead\bin folder.
2. Rename it to steamclient_ori.dll
3. Copy it to 'bin' folder in the game's installation folder.
4. Open up rev.ini and change "#ClientDLL=steamclient.dll.old" to "ClientDLL=steamclient_ori.dll"

Next, add Setti as the MasterServer:
1. Download MasterServers.vdf from here: http://css.setti.info/code/masterserver/
2. Do not put it in platform\config\.
3. Instead create a folder named 'config' inside the 'bin' folder.
4. Copy MasterServers.vdf to the config folder and make it read-only.

Now the Serverbrowser should be working. [Make sure you use the latest RevEmu.]

Finally, add "Server Browser" button to Main Menu:
1- Go to your L4D shortcut you use to launch game. Right click and select properties.
2- In the shortcut tab, add -serverbrowser to the end of the target line.
3- Click Apply and OK.

Open the game, click 'Server Browser', and private servers will now show up in the custom tab of the server browser.

Enjoy!!

Is there a simpler way to start a non-Steam LAN game without using the console? If not, how do I set the difficulty & game mode?

Oh I also had a problem in a LAN game. After like 15 mins of playing not as the host, I got disconnected from the game and it tried to reconnect 10 times but failed. What's going on??

Hi guys!

I tried this, but it isn´t really working.

Search (no filters) is finding nothing.
Trying to add ips manually at favourites is also FAIL.

When i start L4D, this shows up in console:

first, you should have used the # code tags so it would show proper formating, but looks like yer missing the last }to close out the code.

Also,
you have put yer
masterservers.vdf
into
C:\Program Files (x86)\Left 4 Dead\platform\config <--- NO NO!!

it should  be in  here ->>C:\Program Files (x86)\Left 4 Dead\bin\config

Ok, at first i got to thank you Sattanuts, for your help.

Its still not working, but i think we are on a good way.
I have to admit, that in the first time, I was to lazy to read everything in the linked topic, and that was my fault.

now everything should be in the right place, so i guess i made some copy-paste failture at the editing.

I would be happy if you could take a look again, at this :   Smiley

Could it be the RevEmu? Where can i see it´s version?
I have no idea how i could update it (was already included in my realease)
But if i see its out of date, i will search the forums for some "how to update revEmu".

Thanks for your support so far Smiley

EDIT: ok i  downloaded the new revEmu (RC2) but im not sure if i placed the 4 files right. don´t had to overwrite em all, tryed to folder-search the files. and i changed the steamclient_original-thing in the new rev.ini again.
still not working Sad

Don't edit the MainMenu.res
Just add -serverbrowser to yer commandline.
I should have tested this further...  now all is good and easy!!

i think that your problem is that your steamclient.dll is corrupted or a cracked one or atleas a file is corrupted cuz until now its working fine Smiley

make sure you are using the original steamclient.dll in the bin folder and having renamed it to steamclient_ori.dll and it set in rev.ini.
so you should have 2 steamclients in yer bin folder...

steamclient.dll        <---dll from rev-emu
steamclient_ori.dll   <---renamed original dll

AND
ClientDLL=steamclient_ori.dll   <-- set in rev-emu

get original dll from legit steam install directory, or grab the steamclient_original_source.rar attached in this post.

umm its  not working when i type -serverbrowser it gives me an error saying that its the wrong path.

put -serverbrowser in yer startup command line... along with -console -novid -nohltv
Startup should look something like this
"C:\ProgramFiles\Left4Dead\left4dead.exe" -console -novid -nohltv -serverbrowser

which line?

n00b question of the year award for that one^^^

How have you been starting yer left4dead game?
do you know how to edit shortcut properties?
If you followed the guides to install L4D, it would be in this part:

Quote
IV. Play by executing the Cracked Left4Dead.exe!:
Replace left4dead.exe with the Cracked 403KB left4dead.exe.
Create a shortcut on your desktop to left4dead.exe and add -console -novid -nohltv to its launch parameters:
Right click your shortcut, select properties.  In the "Target" field, you should have:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Left 4 Dead\left4dead.exe" -console -novid -nohltv

does that help?

ok i did that but its still not working >.<

u mean the C:\Games\Left 4 Dead\bin right? or C:\Games\Left 4 Dead\left4dead\bin?

cos i have 2 steamclients in C:\Games\Left 4 Dead\bin and the config map there to, with the masterserver.vdf in.
i copied the original steam client from my steam folder and renamed it steamclient_ori.dll and i changed the line in Rev-Emu.

i get the browser and no error with that, but it just doesnt find any servers lol

put 188.40.40.201 in yer rev.ini under MasterServer. <--- this is the new Setti server ip...

and yes.. both dll's in Left4Dead\bin and config in Left4Dead\bin\config
make masterserver.vdf read-only.

how about now?

I need some help... When I double click the Left 4 dead shortcut on my desktop it goes through, displays the vlave logo and the powered by source logo and then the loading screen comes up but then when the menu comes up there is no options... No "Play Campaign" or anything. How would I go about fixing this?

Thanks, Matt
