THE PASSING/DLC HAS SINCE MADE THIS TUTORIAL OBSOLETE! L4D now crashes with MOTD Music!

Does anyone know if a Welcome Sound/Join Server mod has been verified to work with L4D2?

I know the HEROES L4D2 Coop campaign server has found a way to do it.

All the mods I reviewed thus far were said to have been incompatible with l4d2...

HOW TO DO IT:

PREREQUISITES:

- The welcome screen supports non-animated .GIF and .PNG images.
- Welcome screen (your image) pixel size: 766x383

THIS IS WHERE I CAN SPEAK FOR MYSELF REGARDING AUDIO FILES SINCE I AM A COMPOSER

- You can use with wav or mp3 format for the audio files.

- I would recommend using .mp3 files due to their smaller file size compared to .wav!

- For the love of god reduce the decibels (db or volume) of the audio file before you upload it to a hosting service (Mediafire etc. etc.) so you don't blow the ears of the connecting clients! -10db is sufficient

- There is no need for the audio files being over 98kps bitrate, nor 24-bit. Anything over these settings is a waste of bandwidth and causes excessive download time for the client to obtain the file.

- Sony Sound Forge, Sony Vegas, Cakewalk SONAR all have dropout effects for you to use and save the audio file to whatever settings you want.

1) Upload your image to photobucket or another image hosting service.
2) Upload the audio file (.mp3) to a hosting service (MediaFire etc. etc.)

Edit your motd.txt file (directory: left4dead2/leftfordead2/motd.txt) as the following script (also attached for you to download):

<html>
<head>
<title>Motd server</title>
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
margin-left: 0px;
margin-top: 0px;
margin-right: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background-color: #000000;
}
-->
</style>
</head>
<body>
<img src="INSERT THE IMAGE URL YOU WANT HERE.png""100%" "100%"
border="0" align="center">
</body>
</html>
<head>
<NOEMBED>
<BGSOUND src="INSERT THE AUDIO FILE YOU WANT HERE.mp3">
</NOEMBED>
</head>

THIS IS MY PERSONAL MOTD.TXT FOR YOU TO REFERENCE:

Just come and play on our server already to see how this works: 24.179.24.234:27016

This refeshes the motd everytime someone hits the motd key (so I can cange the motd instantly without having to reset the map/server.

um, i 'm still having a bit of problems with getting the mp3 to work. It seems that only i can hear the music and my friends who joined can't. They can see the welcome image though.  Also, the music always play twice, 1st when see the motd and 2nd when i clicked on ok to close the motd. Any ideas to go around this? i have followed the directions to upload the image and mp3 to a file hoster, pasted the code below onto my motd.txt:

<html>
<head>
<title>Motd server</title>
<style type="text/css">
<!--
body {
margin-left: 0px;
margin-top: 0px;
margin-right: 0px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background-color: #000000;
}
-->
</style>
</head>
<body>

Try another file hosting site one that doesnt use Java script such as Media Fire does for the download, i recall that being an issue for MOTD.

I think he said DON'T use mediafire [as it uses java]...
unless you have a premium account that offers direct "hot-links"

You could try to use http://www.fileden.com they offer direct hot-links, and the free account gives you about 5 gb bandwidth per month... you just have to use the "SKIP" button to get past 2 or 3 pages of ads...

Hi,

Sorry for this late post.. My friends hear the song now. but it is still playing twice (first when the motd pops up when u connect to server, and the 2nd when you click on 'ok' to close the motd. How do i make it such a way that it plays once and only once?

By playing it twice do you mean it plays them overlapping or starts playing, then when you click OK/Enter the song starts playing again without overlap? My issue was the latter and it's another inconvenience of L4D2.
